वैसे तो शिव पुराण के अनुसार भगवान शिव के 1000 नाम हैं, परंतु इनमें से लोकप्रिय एवं सर्वसम्मत केवल 108 शिवनाम ही हैं। 

शिव की भक्ति, अर्थात, शिव के अंतर को जान लेने वाला भेद, या यूं कहें, संसार के सभी सुखों, दुखों, जन्म, मृत्यु, कर्म, मोक्ष, एवं कल्याण का मार्ग प्राप्त हो जाने का संयोग। परंतु क्या शिव के सभी गुणों को जाने बिना ये संभव है?

कदाचित नहीं! क्योंकि शिव के स्वरूप को समझ पाना, न केवल असंभव है, अपितु वर्षों की तपस्या से भी शिवरूप के संपूर्ण तथ्य जान ले, ऐसा बिरला ही कोई होगा। 

इतना ही नहीं, आपने न जाने कितनी ही बार सुना होगा, कि शिव न केवल एक ईश्वरीय स्वरूप हैं, बल्कि वह सभी देवी, देवताओं, यक्ष, यक्षिणी, मनुष्य एवं पशु, आदि सभी के स्वामी एवं रक्षक हैं। वह देवों के भी देव है इसीलिए उन्हें महादेव की उपाधि दी गई है। मान्यता यही कहती है कि शिव ही आदिगुरु एवं आदियोगी हैं, जिन्होंने संसार को धर्म-कर्म, ध्यान एवं भक्ति का पाठ सिखाया है। ऐसे भोले हैं हमारे भगवान शिव, जिनको समय के आदि एवं अनंत के सभी भेद ज्ञात हैं, स्वयं जो महाकाल हैं, जिनके चक्र से ही समय-घट को प्रभावित किया जा सकता है। सनातन धर्म के त्रिमूर्ति देवों – ब्रह्मा, विष्णु, एवं महेश में से एक, महेश का स्वरुप यह दर्शाता है की कैसे भगवान शिव, सभी ईश्वरीय सत्ताओं में सर्वोपरि हैं।

महाकाल, महादेव, एवं महायोगी के अतिरिक्त भगवान शिव के अस्तित्व का आधार, और क्या है? तो आइए जानते हैं, शिव, इसके अतिरिक्त और क्या-क्या हैं:

भगवान शिव के 108 नाम, उनके भक्तों के बीच विश्वविख्यात हैं, जिसे हम शिव पुराण में कथित शिव सहस्रनाम के रूप में भी जानते हैं। हालांकि, शिव पुराण के अनुसार भगवान शिव के संपूर्ण 1000 नाम (सहस्रनाम) हैं, किंतु, प्रसिद्धि केवल 108 नामों की ही बताई जाती है। ऐसी मान्यता है कि, यदि कोई शिवभक्त इन 108 शिव नामों का जाप करता है, तो उसके सभी दुखों, शंकाओं, एवं दुर्विचारों का क्षय हो जाता है।
