What is the story behind Adi Kailash and Om Parvat?

Adi Kailash, also known as Chhota Kailash (little Kailash), is a mountain located in the Himalayan range in the Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand, India. It is situated at a height of 5,945 meters above sea level.

Adi Kailash is considered a mirror image of Mount Kailash and a sacred site in Hinduism. It is believed to be the home of Lord Shiva. his partner Parvati, and their children Ganpati and Kartikey.

The mountain is a replica of Mount Kailash in Tibet and holds significant spiritual and cultural importance for Hindus.

It is considered the second among the “Panch Kailash,” five magnificent peaks across the Himalayas bearing the name “Kailash,” other being Mount Kailash in first place, Adi Kailash in second, Shikhar Kailash (Shrikhand Mahadev Kailash) in third, Kinnaur Kailash in fourth and Manimahesh Kailash in fifth place in terms of importance.

Located near the Indo-Tibetan border in Pithoragarh district, these two peaks are not just geographical marvels but living embodiments of faith.

Adi Kailash, the Reflection of Mount Kailash

Often referred to as Chhota Kailash or Little Kailash, Adi Kailash stands majestically at an altitude of 6,310 meters (20,700 feet). 

According to Hindu mythology, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati are believed to reside here,making it one of the most sacred homes after Mount Kailash in Tibet.

Just below the mountain lies Parvati Lake and Gauri Kund, two glacial lakes which symbolizes love & purity. Pilgrims perform rituals here, believing that even a single glimpse of Adi Kailash purifies one’s soul and removes the weight of past karmas.

The journey to Adi Kailash begins from Dharchula (940 m), followed by stops at Gunji (3,200 m) and Jyolingkong (4,700 m). 

Om Parvat ,the Divine Symbol on the Mountain

Just 22 km from Adi Kailash lies the Om Parvat, a mountain where the snow naturally forms the sacred Hindu symbol ‘ॐ (Om)’. This rare phenomenon has made Om Parvat one of the holiest mountains in India and a must-visit for devotees of Lord Shiva. Situated at an altitude of 6,191 meters (20,312 feet), the mountain’s appearance changes with sunlight, making the Om symbol shine like a signature. 

“At Om Parvat, even silence chants the name of Shiva.”

Pilgrims visiting Om Parvat often experience a deep meditative state, feeling as if time stands still. 

The Connection Between Adi Kailash and Om Parvat

Adi Kailash and Om Parvat are spiritually connected. The journey to both is considered an alternative to the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, especially for those unable to travel to Tibet. 

According to belief, worshipping at Adi Kailash and sighting the Om symbol at Om Parvat together holds the same merit as visiting Mount Kailash itself.

The region’s ancient scriptures describe this area as “the abode of the gods”, where  energies meet. Locals also believe that Adi Kailash is guarded by angels in heaven.

Pilgrimage and Yatra

• The yatra starts in mid-May and lasts till mid- October, with the best time to visit from mid- May to June and September to mid-October.

• The newly constructed road Gunji-Lampiya Dhura Pass Road (GLDPR) has significantly reduced the Adi Kailash Yatra, making the pilgrimage more accessible and comfortable for most travelers.

• The construction of this motorable road has reduced travel time and fatigue, allowing pilgrims to reach their destination more easily and quickly

• The road has reduced the trekking distance to Adi Kailash to only 4 km and provides a viewpoint from where the OM Parvat can be seen.

Lesser-Known Facts about Adi Kailash and Om Parvat

• Both peaks are often called Swarg ka Dwar (Gateway to Heaven) for their proximity to the divine area.

• On still days, Adi Kailash’s full reflection can be seen on Parvati Lake,locals consider this moment extremely auspicious.

• Eco-Sacred Region,the area remains untouched by modern construction to preserve its sanctity & Himalayan ecosystem.

• Adi Kailash is said to be the place where Lord Shiva performed his cosmic dance, known as the Tandava. and revealed his divine form to the Sage Ashtavakra.

• The waters of Jolingkong Lake are believed to possess healing properties.

• Parvati Sarovar freezes over in winter transforming into a stunning natural ice rink.

In recent years, the Indian government has improved accessibility to Adi Kailash and Om Parvat via the Limpiyadhura route through Dharchula, promoting spiritual tourism while maintaining ecological balance. 

Helicopter services and improved trekking paths now make the Yatra safer and more organized. 

However, due to the high altitude, pilgrims are advised to acclimatize at Gunji before proceeding further.

The Adi Kailash and Om Parvat region is not just a place,it is a pilgrimage of the soul. It’s where the whispering winds seem to chant “Har Har Mahadev,” and the mountains themselves stand as monuments of faith.
